Google uses the gray logo to pay tribute to influential and famous people who have passed away.
The rest of the world joined Britain in mourning the Queen on Friday 9 September 2022.
Her Majesty passed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon 8th September 2022 at Balmoral Castle.
Many took to the internet to pay tribute to the longest reigning monarch in the service of the United Kingdom.
Politicians including Liz Truss, Theresa May, David Cameron and Boris Johnson all paid tribute to her and expressed pride in serving her as Prime Minister.
World leaders also expressed their admiration, such as US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, while Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote a letter to Prince Charles and the royal family expressing his condolences.
Meanwhile, the public gathered in their thousands outside Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral to mourn the beloved monarch.
Major cities, from New York to Paris, paid tribute by displaying British flags and turning on purple lights at iconic locations.
West Ham fans gathered to sing ‘God Save The Queen’ before kick-off of their Europa League game against FCSB.
Meanwhile, Man United and Real Sociedad observed a minute’s silence at Old Trafford ahead of their Europa League clash.
Has Google ever been gray?
This isn’t the first time Google has used a gray logo to honor the deceased.
This logo is primarily used to pay tribute to those who have served their country.
Every year on the last Monday in May, the United States observes Memorial Day to pay tribute to those who lost their lives serving in the US military.
Google has been doing this for a number of years.
In 2022, they added a special touch with an animation of waving poppies, followed by a message that reads, “For all who sacrificed themselves, thank you.”
A memorial to George HW Bush
On December 4, 2018, Google changed its logo to gray to pay tribute to George HW Bush, who passed away on November 30, 2018.
Bush was the 41st US President and also served as the youngest fighter pilot in the Navy during World War II.
