While talking to Cinema every day, Laura Carmichael talked about how happy she was to see her friends again. It makes sense, since she’s been with this actor company for over six seasons. But more than that, Carmichael is excited by what the script of “A New Era” has available to Lady Edith:
“It’s great to see Edith writing again, when her passion for journalism has returned. Despite having a baby, she still wants to work… The thing that interests her most is writing a book. article about how people are going on vacation in the South of France, because it’s suddenly become a trendy thing. So it’s great to see her back to that.”
While Lady Edith hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention as Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary, it’s clear her role in “A New Era” shows just how far she’s come in the Crawley hierarchy. The character began writing in the third season after Sir Anthony Strallan (Robert Bathurst) left her at the altar. Since then, she’s taken a real liking to the press, effectively showing her family that she’s more than a snobby kid.
Lady Edith not only developed her own prose, but she also seems to be interested in photography in “A New Era”. Considering her streak of bad luck throughout the series, this feels like the character is finally getting some catharsis.
