While Mann believes his stories belong on the cinema screen, he remains dissatisfied with the way modern filmmakers approach action movies today.
“I’m just bored with it. It’s not very interesting… I mean, sometimes the choreography is so overwhelming that it’s catchy, and it’s pretty good. But in general, no. It’s just old.”
Mann didn’t name any specific movies, but when you consider the state of mainstream blockbuster theaters today, it’s easy to see Mann’s point. Take Marvel Studios for example. Due to the company’s massive production and recruitment of independent director talent, a lot of the action sequences in these Marvel Cinematic Universe productions are overseen by a second unit director and a visualization team. in advance, and is often planned before the director is involved. When Lucrecia Martel, a beloved Argentinian filmmaker, advertised “Black Widow,” she was even told to “don’t worry about the action” in her pitch.
This type of approach leads to sequences of actions that are not motivated. Empty calories. The action has no character depth, stake or conflict that contradicts the tone and flow of the film. In short, it’s what Mann flatly describes as “old-fashioned”.
