Ricky Gervais, who is set to perform at the National Comedy Awards tonight for Stand Up to Cancer, has been with partner Jane Fallon for almost four decades. The soul mates cannot live without each other, but marriage or children have ruled them out
Ricky Gervais, best known for his comedy acts, has conquered a whole new legion of fans with the hit Netflix series After Life.
The hugely successful and touching series revolves around local journalist and widower Tony (Gervais) who has lost his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman).
The show follows the widower’s grief journey as he first rages against the world before gradually learning to let people into his life.
Ricky has previously revealed that he was inspired to write the series because of his own relationship with longtime partner Jane Fallon.
Speaking to Alex Jones on BBC1’s The One Show, Gervais said: “The first thought I had was what if you lost everything. You could do whatever you want and there would be no consequences. I had to think, ‘Well, what’s all about losing?’ and for me it is your soul mate, your life partner. So that’s where it comes from.”
Ricky has been with his own soulmate, Jane, for nearly four decades, and the pair enjoy a strong but unconventional relationship – but they have chosen never to marry.
How did Ricky Gervais meet Jane Fallon?
Ricky first met his author Jane Fallon 39 years ago when they attended University College London together.
Soon after, Jane landed a job as a producer at BBC’s EastEnders from 1985 to 1994, while Ricky’s entry into television came later after briefly managing pop band Suede.
In the early days of their relationship, they lived in a flat in Kings Cross when the area was notorious for its street crime, prostitutes, pimps and drug dealers.
Are Ricky Gervais and Jane Fallon married?
The couple’s romance has lasted nearly four decades, but both have always said they will never marry, with staunch atheist Ricky saying he doesn’t need to tie the knot because of his faith.
Ricky told the Times: “We are married in every way, everything is shared and in fact our sham marriage has lasted longer than a real one. But there’s no point in us having a real ceremony in the sight of God, because there isn’t any God.”
Likewise, the duo – both 60 – have ruled out children in their lives. The comedian told the Daily Telegraph: “A good reason I don’t want it [kids] is that I don’t think I sleep at night.”
He went on to explain: “I had to double check I hadn’t left the doors to the pool open for fear the cat would walk through them and drown. So with a kid I would just stand over it and make sure it was still breathing.”
However, the two are firm soul mates, and Ricky admitted in 2019 that he can’t live without Jane and would be “devastated” if they weren’t together.
Speaking on the LIVE With Kelly And Ryan show, he said: “I would break down without her. I mean emotionally first.”
He also later confessed that he wanted to die before his partner, saying, “I want to go first, which is selfish, but I’m doing it.”
