Why we may never see a young James Bond

A recent event at the British Film Institute called “In Conversation: 60 Years of James Bond” featured Michael G. Wilson along with frequent Bond scribes Neal Purvis and Rob Wade, among them others, Wilson delved into their process of selecting candidates for the role. He explains why Eon has held a grudge against younger actors over the years, speech:

“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualize it didn’t work. Remember, Bond is already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a veteran. who’s been through wars, so to speak. He’s probably gone to SAS or something. He’s not a kid out of high school that you can take in and get going. is why it works for a thirty year old.”

To me, this makes perfect sense. Someone with confidence and world-weary like James Bond couldn’t survive in someone who didn’t have enough time to develop those. Some people in their early 20s walk up to a bartender without hesitation and order a vodka martini, unshaken, unstirred, feeling depressed, like he’s trying to be cooler than he is. so we are. With James Bond, he doesn’t act. He To be that guy. Bond has seen everything — terrible things — and goes through life with a rough edge.

So when you’re sitting around daydreaming about the actors you hope to take on the role of 007, keep that 30s in mind. Some 22 year olds won’t get it because you want it. And the same is true in the other direction. Idris Elba probably won’t become James Bond. The man just turned 50 years old.
