A man in his 40s, who was the victim of an attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning, is clinging to life at Beaumont Hospital.
The victim, a father from Ashford, Co. Wicklow, was attacked outside a house in Arklow at 2.30am on Tuesday.
Gardai were made aware of the incident and when they arrived at the scene the man was conscious but refused medical treatment.
Officers left but it is understood the victim was unwell the next day and he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital by ambulance. However, due to his severe head injuries, he was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he is in critical condition.
It is understood the hospital contacted Gardai to let them know the victim had sustained very serious injuries.
Arklow Gardai have been conducting a full investigation since Wednesday and a house on the Ashfield estate was placed under lockdown pending a technical and forensic examination.
Sources say officers are following a “strong investigative line” and have spoken to a number of potential witnesses, including a suspect in the case.
CCTV from a local pub where the victim had socialized earlier Monday night on the bank holiday and other parts of Arklow was also obtained and analyzed.
So far there have been no arrests in the case, but Gardai is investigating whether he was assaulted by a man he knows well.
“The victim in this case is seriously ill in hospital tonight. He has suffered a number of complications since his hospitalization,” a source told Independent.ie.
