Defeating mammoth beasts and harvesting their parts is a staple in a number of games, including the ever-popular Monster Hunter series.
However, the new game Wild Hearts hopes to take the crown of the world’s favorite Goliath collecting game in an interesting partnership between EA and Koei Tecmo.
Wild Hearts makes crafting an essential part of the hunt, as players cannot properly use the pieces they collect unless they know how to create something new.
The ability cap seems pretty daunting and it will take a while for everything to click.
Once things fall into place properly, Wild Hearts’ refreshing mechanics feel like something special.
In a high-fantasy take on feudal Japan known as Azuma, you must take down enormous beats that have been terrorizing its denizens.
Known as kemono, these monsters use magic to change their size and manipulate the world around them.
They resemble real animals more than mythical beasts. You’re more likely to take on a mountainous boar than a dragon.
Still, the world doesn’t feel any less fantastic, as the Boar Kingtusk is not only tall, but tree roots grow out of its back.
Hunters in Azuma are not only talented at slaying beasts, but also masters of invention.
A construction system called Karakuri allows you to build things like springboards and gliders to help you in battle.
During a special presentation, we see a fighter shoot down his Kingtusk using a helicopter he built to evade its powerful ground attacks.
There will be a huge variety of items to build, from trinkets to ziplines.
Eight different weapon types will also be available, with more than 200 variations to craft.
Multiplayer will also be an important part of the game.
Up to three people can team up via Hunter Gates located around the world.
Everything in the roughly 30-hour campaign will be playable in co-op for those who’d rather take it on with a friend.
Depending on the environment or biome you are in, encounters with the Kemono will vary greatly.
The area of Kingtusk contains large Cherry Blossom Trees that nearby creatures can draw energy from.
We haven’t seen much of the three other area types that will be available in the final release, but first looks are promising.
Wild Hearts will be released on February 17, 2023 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
