Wildlife TV host Steve Backshall criticized for saying snakes are deadlier than sharks

TV’s Steve Backshall has been branded as a scarecrow for saying snakes are more dangerous than sharks.

The adventurer, 48, listed the top 10 killer animals alongside sharks – 10 human victims each year – in last place.

Snakes (138,000) ranked second after mosquitoes (725,000).

One Australian snake catcher said on Facebook: “There’s just a lot of real similarity plus fear for these other species. Anything for this rating, Steve. ”

Another user said: “You organize children’s wildlife shows, be more responsible.”

Steve, host of Shark on Sky Nature, said: “This post is pure and simple factual statistics.

“Shark Attack get a lot of media attention but the statistics require a little context. “
