Will Mellor has said that performing at Blackpool for Strictly Come Dancing will be a “magical moment” as the seaside town holds special memories for him.

The Coronation Street star, 46, will be among the remaining eight celebrity contestants and their dance partners competing in the Tower Ballroom on Saturday when the BBC show returns to Blackpool after a two-year absence due to the pandemic.

Ahead of his performance, Mellor revealed that as a child, he used to spend family holidays going to the resorts’ beaches and palaces when growing up, which makes him dream of one day. someone to live there.

The Bredbury-born actor told the PA news agency: “When I was a kid, I used to go out during the day and go see the lights and I’ve never been to the tower, we really couldn’t afford it, and here it is. It’s my chance to dance in the tower so it’s going to be a magical moment.”

He said the place holds “good memories” for him, recalling: “My family and I would be up there all day and freezing cold on the gravel beach looking for crabs, wrapped in coats. and enjoy every minute of it.

“As a kid, I used to dream of living in Blackpool because it was like Las Vegas to me.

“It was like, ‘Can you imagine living near this fair? You will continue it every day’.

His dance partner, Nancy Xu, will also compete at the Tower Ballroom with Strictly for the first time since entering the dance competition in 2019.

“For both of us, that would be great,” she said. Every year when Nghiem goes to Blackpool, it’s always bigger, more glittery and everything is cool. It will make a lot of sense.”

Xu explained how people had “dreamed” of returning to Blackpool after Covid restrictions were eased, adding: “We’d love to come back but every week is special for us. because we want to give our best.

The pair will dance the samba in Hugh Jackman’s I Go To Rio as they take to the dance floor to impress the judges.

Mellor added that he was determined to have his mother in the audience to watch him on the Blackpool special because she was a “crazy fan”.

He said: “My mother is going to Blackpool, I already told her. I said, ‘If you go to Blackpool, I’ll come’.

She is a huge fan of the show. She has a t-shirt that says Team Will on it, which all my sisters have.

“And half of the village where I come from, in Bredbury, and (the people in) Bromley and Stockport are texting me support.

The remaining couples will join the dance floor at the Tower on Saturday 19 November at 7:45pm, with results shown on Sunday 20th November at 7:20pm on BBC One.
