Persistently high Covid cases mean flight crews remain understaffed, forcing airlines to cut some of their flights.

The UK government is no longer fully following the situation, but as recently as April 1, 69,811 cases were reported.

The situation has caused chaos at Manchester Airport in recent days. The Manchester Evening News reported angry passengers who abandoned their luggage, people trying to jump barriers and baggage handlers who said they were “more stressed than ever” by the situation.

easyJet said: “As a result of the current high rates of Covid infection across Europe, easyJet, like all companies, is experiencing a higher than average sick leave rate among employees.

“We have made 62 precautionary cancellations on flights to and from the UK [Monday] which is a small part [Monday’s] Total flight program, which should include more than 1,645 flights. We canceled most of them [on Saturday].”

British Airways has made the decision to reduce the number of flights to around 20 daily by May this year.
