A biopic about Will Smith could be shelved after reports that two streaming giants embroiled in a bidding war for rights were withdrawn after he beat Chris Rock at the Oscars.
Insiders claim that both Netflix and Apple+ have pulled out of the running to bring the actor’s life story closer to audiences.
The bid is thought to have been as high as £10million before the platforms pulled out over the controversial events at this year’s Academy Awards.
A source told The Sun: “Netflix and Apple+ have quietly withdrawn their bids for a Will Smith biopic and will instead reallocate funds and come up with original ideas from new black actors.
“Working with Will has become a risky business. They now plan to develop ideas with more family-friendly stars like Mike Epps and Michael B. Jordan.”
Fresh Prince of Bel Air star Will has retired from the academy since the incident and faces a hearing on April 18 on whether to win the Best Actor Oscar, which he won for his role in King Richard. can keep or not.
Just before he got up to accept the prestigious gong, he stormed the stage and punched comedian Chris in the face.
Chris had made a joke about Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith and told her he couldn’t wait to see her in GI Jane 2.

He referenced how Demi Moore shaved her head for the role, but Jada, who suffers from alopecia, wasn’t impressed.
After punching Chris, Will returned to his seat and yelled at Chris to “keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
It is also reported that a number of Will’s films are set to be scrapped.
The Hollywood Reporter claims a Netflix film titled Fast and Loose and about Star Will has been shelved amid the scandal.
The outlet said, “Shortly after Smith’s attack on Chris Rock on the Oscars stage, Netflix quietly shelved the project.”
TMZ also suggests that Will’s other Netflix projects The Council and Bright 2 could also be trashed as a result of his actions.
His Apple+ project Emancipation is also deep in post-production.
In announcing his retirement from the Academy, Will said: “I have betrayed the Academy’s trust. I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am devastated.
“As such, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences that the board deems appropriate.”
