Will Smith returns to the screen in the movie emancipation trailer

A trailer has been released for the Apple TV + slavery drama Emancipation, Will Smith’s first major project since his infamous Oscar slap.

This film is based on the true story of “The Beaten Peter” from 1863 and premiered in cinemas on December 2 and streaming services on December 9.

Its release will mark the Hollywood star’s first kick-off project since he stormed the stage at this year’s Academy Awards and slapped comedian Chris Rock after a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smith, 54, has been banned from all Academy events or programs for 10 years.

In the trailer, his character is shoved into a cage before supervisor Fassel, played by Ben Foster, tells him: “You walk on earth because I let you. Now I am your lord.

He escaped and began his journey through the swamp to Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana, to join the ranks of the Confederate army.

Dramatic footage shows him fighting an alligator while dodging gunfire. Fassel later added: “He persevered. Do you understand what I mean? Hide, survive’.

Smith is also said to be recreating the famous photograph, called The Scourged Back, which shows Peter’s bare back mutilated from his time as a slave.

The photo became one of the most widely circulated photographs of the abolitionist movement in America and helped garner support behind it.

The film is directed by Antoine Fuqua, whose previous films include Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen and The Equalizer.

In April of last year, Smith and Fuqua, both acting as producers, discontinued Emancipation production from Georgia due to a new state law restricting voting rights.

The film became the biggest and most popular Hollywood entry to leave the state since Georgia’s Republican-controlled legislature passed legislation that introduced stricter voter identification requirements for absentee voting.
