Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after being slapped in the face but declined – and Chris Rock says he’s still handling the incident

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said last night Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars on Sunday after meeting Chris Rock, but he turned it down.

Some have wondered why Smith was allowed to sit in the front row at the Academy Awards after the incident.

On Wednesday, the academy proposed removing the actor from the audience.

“Things developed in a way that we could not have foreseen,” the academy said.

“While we would like to clarify that Mr Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”

The academy’s board of directors met Wednesday to initiate a disciplinary proceeding against Smith for violating the group’s standards of conduct.

The academy said Smith has an opportunity to defend himself in a written response before the board meets again on April 18. The academy said disciplinary action against Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

The film academy had previously condemned Smith’s attack on Rock on stage. But it used stronger language on Wednesday.

“Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television,” the Academy said.

“Mr. Rock, we apologize for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience at this moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what happened during a celebratory event.”

On Monday, Smith apologized to Rock, the Academy and viewers, saying, “I was out of line and I was wrong.”

Meanwhile, Chris Rock says he’s “still processing” his altercation with Will Smith at the Oscars but will talk about it “eventually”.

Referring to the incident at a stand-up show, the comedian promised it would be “serious and funny” if he made an official statement.

At the start of his show in Boston, Rock told the crowd, “How was your weekend?

“I don’t have a lot on my mind about what happened, so if you came to hear that, I have a whole show that I wrote ahead of this weekend.

“I’m still processing what happened.

“Well, someday I’m going to talk about this shit. And it’s going to be serious and fun.”

Rock reportedly received a standing ovation from his audience before starting his set.

A formal review of the incident has been launched to discuss what disciplinary action will be taken and Smith is reportedly to be given an opportunity to defend himself in writing.

The academy said disciplinary action against Smith could include suspension, expulsion or other sanctions.

The actor apologized on social media during his acceptance speech following his win at The Academy and his fellow contestants and later Rock.

In a statement posted to Instagram, he admitted he reacted “emotionally” to the joke, but “violence in all its forms is toxic and destructive.”

Pinkett Smith also called for a “season of healing” following the incident.

Smith’s behavior was heavily criticized by his Hollywood contemporaries, including Oscars host Wanda Sykes.

Speaking on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actress and comedian said she was “still traumatized” and disappointed with how the show handled the “nauseous” incident.

She also praised Rock’s reaction after the altercation, revealing that he reached out to her to apologize for the incident, knowing it would overshadow her presenting efforts alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall.

“I just felt so terrible for my friend Chris. It was disgusting, absolutely disgusting. I felt physically ill and I’m still a little traumatized by it,” she said.

“And so they could have him stay in this room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is that? That’s just the wrong message’.”

“You attack someone, they escort you out of the building and that’s it. But I found it disgusting that they let him continue.”

Oscars showrunner Will Packer described the altercation as “a very painful moment for me.”

But others went further, with comedian Jim Carrey dubbing the Oscar audience “spineless” for applauding Smith’s win after his demeanor.
