Will Smith’s sudden and shocking outburst at the Oscars was “triggered by his childhood trauma,” a friend of the star has claimed.
The 53-year-old actor issued a fawning apology to Chris Rock on Tuesday after taking the stage at the Academy Awards and punching him live on air.
His Oscar win is now “under scrutiny” after his behavior, which he himself acknowledged as “unacceptable and inexcusable”.
The stand-up comedian, 57, had made a reference to alopecia sufferer Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head by joking that he couldn’t wait for GI Jane 2.
Although Will initially appeared to be laughing, his demeanor seemed to change abruptly when he stormed onto the stage and punched Chris in the face on live television.

Chris tried to laugh away the awkward moment – which fans initially thought was part of the show – but the atmosphere in the room turned when Will angrily shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your friggin’ mouth. “
Sources say friends believe Will was “triggered” to respond violently after his childhood trauma.
They have hinted that Will may recall feeling helpless when he was nine and witnessed his mother being beaten by his father, Willard Carroll Smith Sr.
An insider close to Mark Manson, who co-wrote Will’s 2021 memoir, recounted The sun that he was “appalled” and ashamed of the turn of events.

They also claimed that Will is happy “to have something for his unresolved childhood issues and will do whatever it takes to right his current misjudgment.”
The source added, “Essentially, however, Will was deeply moved by Chris’ demeaning comments about his wife’s alopecia. He was transported straight back to childhood when he saw his mother being abused by his father.
“He didn’t take it sitting down this time – and got his revenge, as sadly 50 million people around the world have all seen.”
The Mirror has reached out to Will’s rep for comment.
It comes after Will apologized and admitted he was “out of line”.
He wrote: “Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and inexcusable.
“Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s health was too much for me and I reacted emotionally.
“I want to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.
“I also want to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all contestants and all viewers around the world.”
Serena and Venus were in the audience watching as Will accepted the Oscar for playing their father in the film, and Will also addressed them as he apologized for his violent outburst that overshadowed what would have been a momentous occasion should be.
“I would like to apologize to the Williams family and my King Richard family. I deeply regret that my behavior has marred an otherwise great journey for all of us,” he concluded.
“I’m a work in progress. Sincerely, Will.”.
