Rachael Bletchly wasn’t impressed when Will Smith lost his cool and slapped Chris Rock in the face, but she says the Oscars weren’t entirely without its true heroes

The punchy Will Smith should have been kicked out of the Oscars for his attack on comedian Chris Rock.
That “joke” about Jada’s hair was a low blow, but toasting A-listers is all part of the show now.
Smith also seemed to pretend to join in the laughs until he saw that his wife was genuinely upset.
But after beating Rock, he was allowed to return to his seat, shout profanities and accept the comforting hugs of fellow stars like Denzel Washington and Bradley Cooper during the next commercial break.
Then everyone cheered and applauded as he picked up his gong and wiggled his lower lip during his long, tearful speech, see picture at right.
It took four days of hesitation before the academy board took disciplinary action, admitting they had asked Smith to leave the ceremony, but he declined.

“We could have handled the situation differently,” they say.
A couple of burly security guards marching Smith off his seat would have done the job.
And when his best actor award was announced, an official could have made it clear that violence is always unacceptable and that more action would follow.
Then these image-conscious, fawning A-listers would have all clapped along, reinforcing the message.
Smith has now done the right thing and has resigned from the Oscars academy for his “inexcusable actions”. Officials insist the disciplinary process continues, but their delayed response has allowed him to control the narrative.
However, I don’t think Smith should be stripped of his award – he won it for his acting, not his stubborn personal.
But he should have been publicly reprimanded by the Academy that night
Instead, the whole nasty incident marred the Oscars as they recovered from the pandemic in a glow of old-school glamour.
Enough about the slap-happy will. Let’s focus on the real stars – the winners, nominees and guests who should have taken the spotlight.
Like West Side Story legend Rita Moreno. Because the evergreen 90-year-old gasped audibly as she stepped onto the red carpet in a stunning off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera gown and dramatic feathered headpiece.
And THAT is the definition of a true Oscar knockout.
