Brighton and Hove City Council has confirmed that the marathon organizers will have to clear their debts with this year’s winners before they can return to the 2023 event.
This comes as Grounded Events said they were “extremely confident” the Brighton Marathon would return next year, despite financial difficulties and controversy over monies owed.
In a statement this morning, the council said: “We have made it clear to Grounded Events that their commitments must be met before we consider granting permission to use common land for future events.”
Organizers have yet to confirm when the money owed will be paid.
The council said it was working with the local events business to support them where possible, but added: “We are not responsible for their finances or pursuing any debt owed to them.”
Grounded events attribute their financial difficulties to the pandemic, rising costs and fewer participants.
