Will Young: My career is characterized by sadness and subversion

Will Young said his 20-year music career has been characterized by both “emotional pain” and “subversion”.

The 43-year-old singer, who rose to fame on Pop Idol’s first series in 2002, is celebrating this milestone with a tour and a most successful flashback album.

In the last few years, Young has authored two books on mental health and sexuality, appeared on The Masked Singer, and released her eighth studio album.

When asked about a theme he sees in his career looking back, he told the PA news agency: “I usually say sad. It’s normal to have some kind of emotional pain going on.

“But that being said, in a lot of my videos there is quite a bit of humor.

“I made a video and I pretended to be the host of Blue Peter which I thought was just an incredible music video. It is very resplendent. It’s a song called Who Am I.

“There was a great time when I had to work – there was less money for videos now than before – and I got to work with these incredible directors.

“And there is probably quite a bit of subversion, I would say, in a lot of the things that I do. I don’t really like necessarily following the norm, so I think there’s probably quite a bit of subversion.”

Young said he could approach his career differently and be more successful, but only at the expense of personal happiness.

“Maybe there are other ways that I can do my career and I will be even more successful,” he said. But I don’t think I’ll necessarily be happy.

“So I think the key for me is to believe in the work. I really get a lot out of building a creative whole. I find that very satisfying – really, really satisfying.

“What am I going to do with the pictures? What will I do to perform on TV? It was just, to be honest, a lot of bloody fun.

“And build a program. I was planning the tour and I talked to my creative director about it, and it was really fun.

“But I suppose that could give you longevity. I think you should probably just enjoy it, otherwise it’s no use.”

20 Years: Greatest Hits has now been released through Sony Music and Young’s UK tours in October and November.
