Prince William is reportedly planning to reinvent the role of the Prince of Wales – and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, is set to play a key role in the future.

William, 39, will inherit his father’s title of Prince of Wales when Charles becomes king and is already looking forward to seeing how he will carry out his new duties.

Palace assistants are said to be describing the strategy as “the Cambridge way”, with Kate, 40, expected to undertake more solo overseas tours and William to focus on a handful of charities.

It comes after the couple’s Caribbean tour was marred by protests and criticism after reports of tensions with Clarence House after the trip coincided with Prince Charles’ visit to Ireland.

William is said to be considering reducing the number of charities the Prince of Wales normally keeps, with a focus on mental health, the environment and children’s early years.

The new strategy will reportedly capitalize on the Duchess of Cambridge’s popularity, with Kate increasingly being sent on solo trips abroad.

William also intends to cut half of the estimated 140 staff working for the Prince of Wales if he takes on the role.

The Duke of Cambridge also reportedly prefers more informal meet-and-greets to royal stage events and has no plans to take over The Prince’s Trust, which his father founded in 1976.

The Cambridge plan marks a change in Charles’s strategy as Prince of Wales – but the new plans are not meant to be a snub to the future king.

A source close to William said so post on Sunday : “This approach is not a criticism of what has gone before, but only a commitment to the desire for change.

“It’s about hope and optimism for the future. What drives the Duke and Duchess in everything they do is urgency plus optimism equals action.

“A lot of the causes the Duke and Duchess have embraced is Earthshot [the annual prize awarded by the Royal Foundation for contributions to environmentalism] or the early childhood work touches every other aspect of society as well, so it’s not that by focusing on them they exclude other good causes.

It comes after the royal family attended a thanksgiving service for Prince Philip, where the mortified Duke of York returned to the limelight as he escorted the Queen of Windsor to her seat in the church.

William and Charles are said to be in agreement against Prince Andrew’s return to public life.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Mirror: “In terms of royal events, I don’t expect that we’ll see Prince Andrew any time soon – if ever again.

“He won’t feature at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we can be pretty sure of that.

“Prince Charles and William will be totally against it, it’s a non-starter.”
