Wolf Hall author Dame Hilary Mantel has died at the age of 70

Bestselling author Dame Hilary Mantel has died at the age of 70.

Her publisher HarperCollins described Dame Hilary as “one of the greatest English novelists of the century”.

A statement released by HarperCollins said: “It is with great sadness that AM Heath and HarperCollins announce that bestselling author Dame Hilary Mantel DBE passed away suddenly but peacefully yesterday at the age of 70, surrounded by close family and friends.

“Hilary Mantel was one of the greatest English novelists of this century, and her beloved works are considered modern classics. She will be greatly missed.”

The author is best known for her epic The Wolf Hall Trilogy, of which Diarmaid MacCulloch, Oxford theology professor and biographer of Thomas Cromwell, said: “Hilary has reset historical patterns by reinterpreting the man.”

She won the Man Booker Prize twice, for Wolf Hall and its sequel Bring Up the Bodies, which also won Costa Book of the Year in 2012.

The conclusion of her seminal The Wolf Hall trilogy, The Mirror and the Light was released in 2020 to critical acclaim, an instant #1 bestseller in fiction and a longlist for the 2020 Booker Prize and winner of the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, which she first won for Wolf Hall.

4th Estate Books paid tribute to the author on Twitter, writing, “We are heartbroken at the passing of our beloved author, Dame Hilary Mantel, and our thoughts are with her friends and family, especially her husband Gerald.

“It is a devastating loss and we can only be grateful that she left us such a great body of work.”

Bill Hamilton, Dame Hilary’s agent at literary agency AM Heath, said it was the “greatest privilege” to work with her throughout her career.

He said: “Her wit, stylistic daring, creative ambition and phenomenal historical insight mark her as one of the greatest novelists of our time.

“She will be remembered for her tremendous generosity to other budding writers, her ability to electrify a live audience, and the tremendous breadth of her journalism and criticism, which produces some of the finest commentary on issues and books.

“Emails from Hilary were peppered with quips and jokes as she gleefully watched the world and indulged in the lazy or absurd and nailed-down atrocities and prejudices.

“There was always a slight aura of otherworldliness about her as she saw and felt things that we mere mortals missed, but when she saw the need for a confrontation she went into battle fearlessly.

“And all against the backdrop of chronic health issues that she has dealt with so stoically. We will miss her immensely, but she leaves an extraordinary legacy as a beacon for writers and readers. Our thoughts are with her beloved husband Gerald, family and friends.”
