A WOMAN, in her 20s, was kicked and punched in an attack as she walked home last weekend.

Gardai described the attack as “particularly bad.”

It is understood that the woman was walking home alone and trying to fend off her attacker.

According to one source, gardai believes the victim was being watched by the attacker for some time before committing the crime.

The woman called for help and bystanders rushed to her aid before calling an ambulance.

The woman was taken to Cork University Hospital in an ambulance for treatment after she was punched multiple times during the attack.

The man fled the scene after the woman shouted for help.

Gardai is investigating the attack saying it is following a “definite line of investigation” but no arrests have been made.

Police are examining CCTV security camera footage from downtown streets in an attempt to pinpoint the attacker’s whereabouts.

A source said: ‘It is not known whether he intended to rob her or his motives were even more sinister.

Gardai spoke with the victim, who has since been discharged, and with members of the public who witnessed the brutal attack.

Mary Crilly of the Cork Center for Sexual Abuse said the attack was “shocking”.


She told Paul Byrne on Virgin Media News: “I don’t think things have changed… I think male violence against women continues. I think society is not fully aware of the impact, extent or prevalence of violence against women.”

“Everybody out there can make a big difference and they need to know that it is up to each person to help change the culture.”

An Garda Siochana spokesperson said: “Gardai is investigating an assault that occurred on Evergreen Street, Cork City, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

“A woman in her 20s was taken to University Hospital Cork for treatment of her injuries.
