Gardaí have charged a woman in her 40s in connection with the discovery of the body of an elderly woman in a Dublin city center apartment building.
The victim, in his 80s, was discovered at a property on Seville Place, northeast of downtown. She was known locally as Mary Bergin.
The accused woman is due to appear before the criminal courts this morning.
Niall Ring, councilor for North Downtown, said locals were stunned by the discovery.
“Everyone is in shock. The lady in question was a well-known, popular and respected member of a very close-knit community,” he said.
“She worked at the local church, she was a friend to everyone and would do anything for anyone, just a gentle woman who lived in her own area and was part of this great community.
“It is really sad that this tragedy is coming to this area. There is great sadness in the area.”
A neighbor said: “She was a very quiet woman but very pleasant. You think that at this age you can live your life peacefully. It’s very sad, the whole thing.”
