A woman has been killed and several others injured in an early-morning accident involving a car and pedestrians.
ardaí are investigating whether icy road conditions were a factor in the Cork road accident in which the vehicle struck several pedestrians and fatally injured a woman in her 50s.
The tragedy happened at around 1.10am at Dromanallig in Ballingeary, Co Cork.
A pedestrian, believed to be in her early 50s, was fatally injured.
She died at the scene despite trying desperately to help her.
The woman’s body was taken to Cork University Hospital where an autopsy will now take place.
Two other pedestrians, both in their 40s, were also taken to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.
However, the injuries involved are not classified as life-threatening.
The group is understood to have returned from a social gathering and headed home.
The driver of the car, in his early 40s, and his passenger were unharmed.
However, they were treated for shock at the scene.
Ballingeary Main Street is now closed to facilitate the work of Garda Forensic Collision investigators who will conduct a full technical investigation at the crime scene.
Local diversions are in place and motorists have been urged to avoid the main road.
Gardaí is now appealing to all witnesses to this collision to come forward.
