A woman found dead at an address last week was an Italian university lecturer.

dr Antonella Castelvedere, 52, has been named as the woman who died in Colchester, Essex, by the University of Suffolk and Italian media.

Essex Police rushed to an address just after 11.45am on June 1 and found a woman seriously injured.

She died at the scene. According to Italian media, the mother of a child was stabbed.

Police said they also found a man injured at the address, and he was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken to hospital for treatment.

The force added that they are not looking for anyone in connection with the death.

Police have not named the woman who died, but the University of Suffolk said in a statement: “The University of Suffolk community is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Dr. Antonella Castelvedere.

“Antonella was a widely respected and well-loved staff member at the university, where she was an outstanding academic in English and critical writing.

“Our thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.”

Detective Chief Inspector Antony Alcock of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, who is leading the investigation, said detectives were “continuing to compile the circumstances leading up to this incident”.

He said investigations “indicate this was an isolated case and there is no threat to the general public in Colchester”.

He said: “A dedicated team of detectives continues to work to piece together the circumstances that led to this incident in Colchester.

“As part of this, officers continue to collect reports from people who have come forward to speak to us.

“I would again like to appeal to anyone who has information about this incident but has not yet contacted us, to please speak up, no matter how insignificant you think your information is.

“And I would also like to reiterate that our investigations to date indicate that this was an isolated case and does not pose a threat to the general public in Colchester.”
