Woman, 70, killed in Sligo road accident as Gardaí appealed to the public not to share footage of the scene online

A pedestrian in her 70s died after being hit by a car in the city of Sligo this afternoon.
The woman was killed in the clash at the junction of Castle and Market streets around 4pm.
Gardaí said they are aware that some cell phone camera footage is being shared on social media of the scene and appealed to people “to stop sharing these images if they come across them out of respect for the family of the deceased”.
A male pedestrian was taken to Sligo University Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries sustained in the collision.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passenger of the car involved were also taken to Sligo University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services were called to the scene, where a car appeared to spin out of control and ended up in an empty shop.
Eyewitnesses said they saw a car travel down Old Market Street and appear to have gotten out of control, ascending the footpath at Grattan Street before crashing through the site’s front window.
Castle Street and Market Street are currently closed and an engineering investigation is underway by forensic collision investigators. Local diversions have been set up.
Gardaí appeals to all witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any motorists or pedestrians with camera footage (including dash cam) who were in the Castle Street or Market Street areas between 4pm and 4:15pm are asked to provide such footage to Gardaí.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sligo Garda Station on 071 9157000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
