A woman has become a mother at 47 after mistaking the early signs of pregnancy for menopause.
Tania Behrns closed the door to becoming a mother aged 44 as she believed she was ‘too old’ to conceive.
Three years later, she missed her period by just six weeks in a new relationship with her ex-partner.
The beauty therapist from Christchurch, New Zealand, automatically assumed she was going through menopause until a test revealed two lines.
The 48-year-old is the proud mother of one-year-old Anastasia Bracken.
“I’ve always been career driven, so I accepted that at 44 I would never be a mom,” Tania said.
“A few years later, I dated someone for a total of seven weeks and missed a period.
“I was suddenly super tired all the time, but I wasn’t worried at all. I assumed menopause had started, but my girlfriend persuaded me to take a pregnancy test.
“I just bought it to amuse her as I didn’t think it was possible to get pregnant naturally in my late forties.”
Tania was shocked to see two lines but doubted she would be able to carry the baby full time.
She said: “My first thoughts turned to work, I was worried about letting my clients down as I wanted to confirm the result with a doctor.
“I couldn’t believe I was pregnant and I certainly didn’t think the baby was going to stay.
“By 12 weeks I was in disbelief because I didn’t believe anyone my age could have a baby.”
She adds: “The first trimester was really scary. I thought I was going to miscarry because of my age and worried that the baby might have Down Syndrome.
“There was a lot of fear and uncertainty. I was finally able to relax when the results confirmed my baby was healthy.
“I had a perfect pregnancy, I loved being pregnant. My skin was glowing and I felt great.”
Tania decided to have a voluntary C-section at 39 weeks and Anastasia was born on May 19th weighing 6lbs 6oz.
She adds: “I was so emotional, it was surreal to see this little baby for the first time.
“She was perfect, I knew she was a miracle. I knew nothing about motherhood, but I’m learning along the way.
“We are a team, she is the happiest baby and so relaxed.”
Tania and Anastasia’s father tried a relationship, but it didn’t work out.

She adds: “As a single mom, it’s difficult to manage my time. I enjoy working and serving my clients, so balancing motherhood and my career can be difficult.
“I work limited now, Anastasia has a lot of one-on-one meetings with me. She is my top priority.
“I am very grateful to have a good balance.”
While most people were smitten with Tania, some wondered why she would want to give birth at her age.
She said: “I haven’t received any negative comments on my face but I know some people have wondered why I would be having a baby in my late 40s.
“But why shouldn’t I? Quitting wasn’t even an option.
“I am proof that whatever is destined for us will happen. Anastasia is a true wonder.”
