A woman born with her organs on the wrong side of her body has not been diagnosed with this rare condition for 14 years.

Olesya Kulikova, 27, suffered from a variety of medical problems for years until doctors finally diagnosed her with situs inversus totalis, an anomaly characterized by a magnifying glass of the major organs.

Just one in 10,000 people is born with the condition, and Olesya, from Achinsk, Russia, has spoken out to raise awareness after only being diagnosed in 2009.

She said when doctors discover it in unborn babies, they will often recommend abortions and tell expectant mothers their child is unlikely to survive birth.

Olesya has been in and out of the hospital since birth, struggling with illnesses such as pneumonia, bronchial asthma and severe abdominal pain.

She told NeedToKnow.online: “I found out my heart was on the right side when I was 14 and I found out my liver was on the left side when I was 18.

“In 2019 I was hospitalized with pneumonia when I was told that my lungs were mirror-inverted.

“Every time I go through a medical exam, I have to explain that my heart is on the right, not on the left like all people.

“I have no tattoos, documents or jewelry that could warn doctors if I’m losing consciousness.

“During the electrocardiogram, a test [which checks the heart’s rhythm] I have to tell the doctors to place the electrodes on the right.”

Her condition has made it difficult to identify other health issues, and just last year doctors told her she also had Kartagener syndrome, an inherited condition that causes difficulty in clearing debris and fluids from the lungs.

She said: “Because of this I’ve had pneumonia four times and as I also have bronchial asthma I have shortness of breath and a constant cough.

“In April I went to the hospital with a stomach ache and when I told the doctor about my condition he suggested it was appendicitis.

“It turned out to be urolithiasis, also known as kidney stones.”

Olesya said: “I met a girl who gave birth to a boy with this disease and she told me that the doctors said that when she was pregnant her child might not live.

“If he survived he might be disabled and she was later offered an abortion.

“Since doctors rarely encounter this type of scenario, they assumed the baby would die – but she had a healthy baby, which I call a miracle.

“In another case, the child was born with a right heart and had a defect, but underwent surgery and now has a perfectly healthy heart.”

Olesya is the only person in her family with this disease and has no children of her own.

Of course, lately she’s been trying to improve her breathing by going to the gym.

She hopes to spread the message that people with the anomaly can live into adulthood and that they are not alone.

She added: “I admit I was embarrassed that I had situs inversus totalis – but I started blogging and people from all different countries wrote to me.

“Most people often ask questions about my health and many find me through hashtags where I offer support.

“Of course everyone hopes that their children will live happily ever after with this anomaly and I am convinced that we can lead normal lives.”
