A WOMAN accused of the murder of her elderly mother Mary Bergin in Dublin has been remanded in custody with a request for “urgent” psychiatric treatment.
Her daughter Moire Bergin (45) appeared in court today.
Mary Bergin, who was in her 70s, was very involved in her community and was also a church celebrant.
The retiree was found dead at her home on First Avenue off Seville Place in north downtown around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday.
Gardaí visited and preserved the scene for a technical investigation. The state pathologist was called to perform an autopsy.
Moire Bergin was arrested and imprisoned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Store Street Garda railway station.
Gardaí charged her just after 1am today and she was being held pending her appearance before Judge Conal Gibbons at Dublin District Court.
Dressed in a light gray tracksuit, Moire Bergin sat and blessed herself as the hearing began.
Detective Sergeant John Brady witnessed the arrest.
In response to the murder charge following a caution, Judge Gibbons overheard Ms Bergin saying “Sea” in Irish.
Detective Sergeant Brady requested a week’s detention.
The District Court does not have the power to rule on bail in murder cases, which only the High Court can rule on.
Ms Bergin, also of First Avenue, Seville Place, stood quietly conferring with her attorney, Katherine Dowling, who told Judge Gibbons she had no questions for the Garda witness.
The attorney said it was believed her client was in “urgent psychiatric treatment” need and the court had authority to make the request.
She added that Ms Bergin, who did not address the court, was an inpatient in a psychiatric facility and there were concerns about her.
Ms. Dowling said a report was needed on her client’s ability to plead, which the defense would address.
Judge Gibbons granted her legal aid and remanded her in custody, only to reappear on April 21 for instructions from the chief prosecutor.
He agreed to direct urgent medical, including psychiatric, treatment for Ms. Bergin in custody, noting that suitability for trial would emerge later.
