A woman has revealed her incredible 13 stone weight loss after years of struggling with her height and relationship with food.

Carla Piera FitzGerald, 35, decided to embark on a journey of self-reflection after realizing in 2019 that things needed to change.

She told that Irish mirror: “I actually had a realization in July 2019 that everything I was thinking about myself was a lie.

“I was literally driving down the N7 to get a massage with my partner and I had been journaling a bit, a process called morning pages and a few other things and things kind of started moving inside me… my doctor calls it.” a Damascus moment.”

The 35-year-old said she struggled with constant negative self-talk, but quickly realized those thoughts weren’t her own.

She said: “I just had this realization that all this negative self-talk wasn’t really my voice… This person who’s constantly talking in my head has nothing to do with me actually. Those are stigmas I picked up on from society and people around me, and I was like, ‘Huh, so who am I?’”

Carla had tried to lose weight through various diet plans over the years but nothing ever seemed to work.

She said: “I’ve been trying to lose weight my whole life. I’ve always been overweight, always. I was a bigger kid. I always ate something.

“I’ve done everything, Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Keto, Atkins. I’ve done every single diet and nothing has worked and I realized it was because I was punishing myself and this time the difference was that it came from a place of love.

She added, “I’ve lived with so much shame and thought I was ashamed of being fat, but turns out I was fat because of my shame.”

Carla has suffered from food addiction for many years and says this was her last attempt at losing weight naturally before deciding on a procedure like gastric sleeve surgery.

She said: “I had binge eating disorder about ten years ago and I then had a binge eating disorder my whole life, basically since I was a kid and I realized my binge eating was just this method to to escape how bad I felt about myself.”

She added: “Similar to addiction to drugs or anything else, it’s easy to use something to numb and stop the bad feelings I’ve had about myself. Once I started realizing that, I was on a massive road to recovery.”

To ensure she was ready for the big lifestyle change, Carla decided to see a therapist to better understand herself and her relationship with food.

She said: “I decided to work with a therapist and I had worked with another therapist for binge eating disorder about ten years ago and I knew I had to get my head in order.

“I still had some issues to contend with, and once I realized there was still a mental health issue I needed to work on, and when I did that, I finally felt ready to actually get involved.” to start losing weight.

“I did the Body Slims program which is this amazing Irish program like you’ve never done before and it really focuses on three pillars of weight loss which is mental health, exercise and diet.

“So it’s a calorie controlled diet but you pick what you want and you listen to weekly seminars and it was really just a validation of what I learned in therapy about food and why we reach for food. “

In just ten weeks of the program, Carla lost seven pounds and continued until she reached her goal weight.

She said: “I felt like I was being given the greatest gift. It was a sense of freedom that I have never experienced in my entire life.”

Not long after she reached her goal weight, Carla found out she was pregnant with her first child, Brannach.

She said: “I reached my goal weight in March 2021 and got pregnant in April 2021. So basically I had a month at my goal weight before I got pregnant and then I had a couple of weeks before I realized I was pregnant and it was difficult to see my body growing back but I did went back to my therapist and talked to her about it a little bit.

She added, “In a way, I’ve validated myself that … I’m not gaining weight because I’m gaining weight. I’m growing into a human, and that’s what my body needs for that, and after a while, I was totally fine with that.

“Then when I had Brannach in January, giving birth to him was quite a traumatic experience.

“I was hoping for a home birth and ended up having an emergency c-section after three days of labor induction, which left me quite vulnerable. I ended up getting postnatal depression and that was a struggle in itself.

“And then once I came out on the other side of that, I was fine, so I gained weight.

“My son was over two weeks late for his due date and it was a lot of stress around the Christmas period waiting for him and wondering where he was and why he hadn’t come and things like that and then I wasn’t Getting back to food, I was definitely eating more than I needed at the time, and I wasn’t moving as much.

“But now … I think, okay, that was the weight I gained to have my beautiful son and now I’m doing exactly what I was doing before and I’m going to get back to my goal weight.”

Carla decided to document her weight loss journey via her YouTube and Instagram platforms, halfofcarla, where she has praised her for being open about her struggles with weight loss and postnatal depression.

She said: “I went a bit radio silent after I announced that he (Brannach) was born and that was the three weeks that the depression really kicked in.

“When I came out and said it, it was probably … the most intense interaction I’ve had with people and the most vulnerable reactions I’ve received, because I think most women who give birth suffer from some form of postnatal depression,” she said it was very mild and the baby blues or to the extreme and I was somewhere in the not very extreme range but I could have gotten there if I hadn’t sought help.

Carla said that sharing her weight loss journey has been incredibly rewarding, both physically and mentally

She added: “I didn’t expect the reaction I got when I announced I have postnatal depression because it’s something that affects so many people and the number of women who have reached out to me and said , I wish I had someone like you when I had postnatal depression to know I wasn’t alone.”

Carla said the reaction she received on social media showed the support online communities can offer to people who are struggling.

She said: “You know, social media gets a lot of attention but there’s also something so wonderful about it because it allows people to share their experiences and it helps people not feel alone and I think that’s one of those nicest things about it.”

Carla said that sharing her weight loss journey has been incredibly rewarding, both physically and mentally.

She said: “Personally, the most rewarding thing for me is the freedom I feel now.

“The freedom of thought, not having to worry about walking into a meeting and not fitting in a chair, which has happened to me before. I don’t have to worry if we go to a restaurant. Will I fit in the cabin? I don’t have to worry about going to an event or needing something to wear in the morning. I don’t have to worry about embarrassment if I go to the hospital because of my weight, or some doctor will blame my weight on anything.

“There’s a freedom of thought that comes with weight loss and mental liberation that’s so rewarding, but also on a larger scale outside of myself, it’s the most rewarding thing, and honestly, it almost brings me to tears on a daily basis.” are the private messages I get from people telling me that I’ve changed their lives or that I’ve given them hope or that you know that seeing me help them in some way, either with theirs Journey to mental health or her weight loss journey with her new maternity journey.

“The community I have created or been created around me to share my story is amazing.”
