A woman posing as an escort armed with a fake semi-automatic revolver has robbed a ‘terrified’ man €300 after the two arranged to meet for paid sex.

t Ennis Circuit Court, Judge Eoin Garavan jailed Clara Chapman (27) of Church View, Miltown Malbay, for four years with the last 18 months of probation.

Judge Garavan described Ms Chapman’s robbery as “a ruthless scheme and a mercilessly and effectively executed trap”.

Judge Garavan said: “This was an armed robbery. This man must have been terrified.”

Judge Garavan said Ms Chapman’s offense involved “the humiliation of the victim”.

In this case, Ms Chapman’s 38-year-old victim responded to an advertisement she placed on the online classified website, Locanto, which advertised paid sex as a ‘young escort’. Ireland’.

Judge Garavan said that after Ms Chapman manufactured the fake gun, “it must have been a rather appalling experience for a young man who was expecting something different in exchange for 100 euros”.

Judge Garavan said Ms Chapman “will overlook this but for the good work of the eagle-eyed Gardaí”.

Judge Garavan noted that the victim chose not to come to court to provide a victim impact statement “and there must be an element of humiliation for having fallen into this in those cases”.

Judge Garavan said that the man traveling on a bicycle “shows his innocence or otherwise”.

Garda Niamh O’Malley told the court that gardaí was able to obtain camera footage from a passing bus en route to Dublin, capturing the injured party and Ms Chapman.

Garda O’Malley also said that gardaí obtained footage from a nearby Applegreen service station that also identified the two together.

Garda said a search of Ms Chapman’s home recovered a fake firearm – an airgun resembling a Colt 7 automatic pistol.

Ms Chapman has 46 previous convictions and is currently serving a prison sentence until July 2023 for drug-related offences.

Ms Chapman’s attorney, Aaron Desmond BL, said Ms Chapman was placed in a foster home at the age of two and both her biological parents suffered from addictions.

Mr Desmond said Ms Chapman became addicted to heroin and then joined the methadone program.

While serving her current prison sentence, Chapman has made great strides in her education and dealing with her addiction, he said.

He said the mother of two had pleaded guilty to robbery and had insight into her offense.
