A woman has shared her horrifying experience when two women allegedly tried to kidnap her niece at a flea market.
Louise Stockdale said she was with her two-year-old daughter Sadie at Redcar racecourse on Thrush Road in Middlesbrough on Sunday when the incident happened.
In a post on Facebook, Louise shared how the couple – one young woman and the other a child – approached Sadie and grabbed her hand before attempting to walk her away.
Cleveland Police arrested the two women last night, one aged 21 and the other a juvenile. The sun reports.
Louise said the day was “terrible” and explained that she is sharing the post to make people aware of the dangers she faced that day.
“Today we are lucky and can all go home safely. We’re still in shock, but we’re all safe,” she said.
“We were at the Redcar boot. We were a couple and had split up.
“I was with my youngest niece, two. She was happily walking along when two ladies came into the picture.
“As I followed my niece, they came into view again and took her hand.
“I saw that straight away as she was my only priority so I told her to let go and took my niece’s hand from the ladies hand.
“There was no eye contact, nothing, and they disappeared.
“It shook me, but my niece was safe.”
After contacting security officers, Louise said she went to find the women.
She said it “soon became clear” that they were “not alone” and she was surrounded by 15 other women who appeared to belong to the same group.
Luckily, she said security at the event was “amazing,” as were the members of the public who were in attendance at the time.
“They did not escape and were arrested,” she said.
Louise said the experience left the family “shocked” and urged all parents and carers to “keep on.” [their] close babies”.
“That was an opportunist who could have gotten away with it because it was so crowded,” she said.
A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “Two women, a 21-year-old and a juvenile, are in custody following an alleged incident at a flea market at Redcar Racetrack on Thrush Road.
“One woman reported that her two-year-old child was walking next to a family member when two women approached her and tried to walk her away.
“When challenged, they reportedly released the child and were arrested.
“The investigation is ongoing and police would be asking for any information regarding this alleged incident or the women allegedly involved – particularly in the period prior to 2.15pm.
