Woman stunned after being criticized for reading classic book at restaurant
The woman took to Reddit to explain that she was just tending to her own business reading at a restaurant when someone aggressively approached her and told her the book was “inappropriate.”

Reading in a public place can be a super fun activity – it gives you serious energy for the main character and makes you look mysterious and interesting to everyone who sees you.
That’s what a woman doing, minding her own business and reading, when someone else approached her and told her that the book she was reading was “inappropriate.”
The woman took to Reddit to recall the horrific incident she recently recalled after taking the same book off her shelf and feeling anxious just looking at it.
Before discussing the incident, the woman revealed some details about her life, explaining that she was almost deaf in her right ear and became weak in her left ear due to serious ear infections as a child. As a result, she suffers from social anxiety as she cannot hear herself speaking well, so speaking softly or not at all.
She wrote: “I went out on my day off, drawing the water and some wildlife near a beautiful lake not far from my apartment and also checking out the sailing ships there (I’m a nautical and sailing nerd).

“Afterwards, I went to a nearby restaurant to eat and enjoy the book I’m reading, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.
“Now remember that I was sitting to my right facing the exit of the booth and hardly heard anyone and paid no attention to anyone except my lovely waiter who complimented me on my choice of reading as it is a true classic Literary history acts!
“I got a pat on the back in the middle of an intriguing part. I look up and see a normal looking lady but with not very good lipstick. She seems a bit shocked and I’m confused.”
She then described how the stranger accused her of reading “porn” and demanded that she edit the classic story.
After the trauma of a seriously unnecessary confrontation, the woman took her book and hid it behind her back when the attacker asked her to turn it over.
The woman then said the stranger started yelling for the manager and urged her to take action.
Unsurprisingly, this resulted in the woman being banned while the woman, who sought some rest, was offered an apology from the manager.
Who would have thought that there could be so much drama in a piece of classical literature?
Other Redditors jumped in defense of the original poster, writing, “Welcome to the land of the amazingly stupid!”
Another hilariously wrote: “I have to wonder what kind of mind would see this book and think ‘porn’ rather than ‘a long, convoluted novel about a crazy sea captain and an albino sperm whale’? Oops, I said sperm. This must be a porn!”
One disgruntled user said: “A quote from Mark Twain comes to mind – ‘The man who cannot read has no advantage over the man who cannot read.’
“This entitled woman should spend more time reading and less time monitoring what other people are reading.”
