We’ve learned a lot of things about clothing lately that we didn’t know before – like why women’s jeans have small buttons and why underwear often has small bows.
And now we’re blown away once again when we figure out why men’s and women’s shirts button differently.
In case you didn’t know, men’s shirts button on the right side, while women’s shirts button on the left.
Since most shirts look the same, you probably haven’t noticed – but it turns out the reason is historical.

According to Melanie M. Moore, founder of women’s blouse brand Elizabeth & Clarke, this has to do with the way women dressed in the past – from the 13th century.
Speak with today.com, Melanie explains: “When buttons were invented in the 13th century, like most new technologies, they were very expensive.
“In those days, wealthy women did not dress themselves, but their maids. Since most people were right-handed, it was easier for someone standing across from you to button your dress.”
The tradition has been preserved on many shirts to this day.
Melanie went on to say that when it comes to men’s shirts, there are several theories as to why the buttons are always on the right side and it all depends on the times.
However, she adds that “usually” many elements of menswear have military roots.
The rule assumes that the majority of men are right-handed and buttoning on the right side would have made it easier to access a gun tucked in their shirt from their “dominant” side.
Taking to social media, many people shared their surprise at having just made this discovery, with one person tweeting, “Just recently found out women buttons fall differently on shirts than men…damn it.”
Another wrote: “Just found out shirt buttons are different for men and women???????”
While another user wrote, “The fact that men’s and women’s shirts button up differently will never bother me.”
