Books awaken our imagination, take us to new worlds, inspire and challenge us – not only as children, but throughout our lives. Today, on the occasion of World Book Day – a day dedicated to celebrating the wonders of storytelling and getting lost in a good book, we thought it was time to extend our thanks to the humble bookshelf too.

Following recent social media trends, bookcase styling is becoming an increasingly popular focus of interior design. Pinterest trends show that searches for “styling bookshelves” are up over 47% this year alone. The “bookshelf” hashtag on TikTok received a whopping 946,500,000 views, proving that bookshelf styling is here to stay.

With this in mind, interior designers experts at furniture box used social media to analyze the most popular and eye-catching ways of arranging your bookshelves.

1. It’s all about the stack

Your bookshelf reveals a lot about you: the types of books you read, your style choices, what you value and what you choose to display in your home

How you stack and display your books is the foundation of styling your bookcase. Do you want all of your books to stand vertically, or do you want to shuffle some books while lying down? Do you want to lean your books against a special ornament or do you want your covers to be arranged in order of height, from highest to lowest?

All of these book stacking options have their stylistic advantages. For example, if you’re a fan of clean lines and order, stacking your books in height or in a pattern might suit your space best. Alternatively, if you’re going for a more fluid interior style, leaning some stacks of books against it could help add a little more movement and flow to the styling.

2. Minimalism

A great design hack for minimalist bookcase styling is choosing a narrow bookcase. A thin bookcase naturally lends itself to avoiding being overcrowded, so hopefully you’ll want to avoid having the bookshelves look overwhelming for your simple space.

Another great trick is to opt for industrial-style bookcases, which often use minimal materials. This will help complement your minimalist interiors as the eye needs to follow a strong line.

3. Maximalism

If you’re a “more is more” person, then arranging your bookcase is a fantastic source of zest in your living space. From colorful stacking options to bold ornaments, from bookshelf positioning to bold color choices, you can make your bookshelf an impactful feature instead of something to bypass.

A great way to show off your bookshelf is to build it around an entryway or doorway. The full border of bookshelves allows you to create an eye-catching feature wall that celebrates your unique reading list.

4. Home library

Add a rolling library ladder or vintage stool to give your home library a unique look

Every bookworm dreams of having their own home library, and that dream may be more achievable than you first thought. Wall-to-ceiling bookshelves aren’t for the faint of heart, but they’re a fantastic decor choice for readers who rummage through lots of books.

When setting up a home library, it’s best to opt for a neutral color background and paint your shelves a monochrome or natural hue that complements the rest of the room. This allows the spines of your book collection to shine and speak for themselves.

Add a rolling library ladder for an extra nod to library styling, or perhaps go hunting for a vintage stool or painter’s ladder for something unique.

5. Floating shelves

If you’re a fan of indoor illusions, then we can’t think of anything better than the floating shelf. Still popular on social media platforms, floating shelves can be installed (with incredible ease) anywhere in your home to add an eye-catching quality to your books.

Floating shelves are also a great option if you don’t have a lot of room to play around. Putting your book collection on the wall is a great way to efficiently incorporate a design element in your home while also providing much-needed storage space for your books and jewelry.

6. Reading Corner

Building bespoke shelving or bookshelves around a seating area is a fantastic way to combine reading your favorite books with where they are stored and displayed to the world.

7. Read the rainbow

A rainbow bookshelf can become your very own art piece in your home with very little effort

Arranging your bookshelf by the color of the spines turns your bookshelf from a random collection of books into a focal point in the room, instantly drawing people’s attention while showcasing your literature collection.

Laura Rich, Product Developer at Furniturebox, commented on the design of bookshelves for World Book Day: “Celebrated annually in the UK, World Book Day is a charity event that gives every child in the UK the opportunity to read a good book lose . Properly styled, our bookshelves can be a focal point of the home and encourage little ones to read.

“Start with a good cleaning to remove dust build-up, then mix up the book placement until you find a combination that’s pleasing to the eye. I’ve found that playing around with verticals and horizontals produces some fantastic results.

“When placing the books, remember to leave some space for houseplants or maybe even an eye-catching piece of art. Some interesting shapes and pops of color can bring the bookcase to life.”
