Xbox 360 Marketplace will close over the next year

The end of an era is upon us.

The end of an era seems to be near. Xbox has announced via the Xbox support page that the Xbox 360 Marketplace will close sometime next year. The site encourages players to purchase all Xbox 360 games and DLCs through May 2023, which is believed to be around the time the store begins the closing process.

This news follows Xbox’s announcement that approximately 46 games will be removed from the Xbox 360 Marketplace on February 7th. This list includes titles like Dark Souls, Left for Dead 2, Mass Effect 2, and more.

While these titles are being removed, Xbox will allow gamers to re-download games if they are already on their console. These steps only apply to first-time purchases of games. This also does not affect the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S marketplaces; Games playable on these consoles via the Backward Compatibility Program will continue to be available through their respective digital storefronts.

It seems that Microsoft isn’t the only one who will remove games from digital stores. PlayStation recently announced that the PS Plus Collection will no longer be offered to gamers as of May 9, 2023, around the time the Xbox 360 Marketplace shutdown begins. Interested players should make sure to grab the titles available on these services while they still can.
