Xbox CEO Phil Spencer received a Lifetime Achievement Award at DICE 2022 last week, putting an exclamation point on a nearly 35-year career that has seen him rise from an intern to a… one of the most powerful leaders in the game industry.
Speaking to IGN after his acceptance speech, Spencer addressed the gaming community directly, urging them to respect creators above all else.

Spencer’s comments followed a speech in which he called the toxicity in games, saying the games industry has “responsibility for billions of players.”

And we have a responsibility to ourselves,” Spencer said. “Our responsibility is simple: to do everything we can to ensure that this entire industry is geared toward treating everyone with dignity and respect.”
Toxicity is a key theme throughout DICE, an industry-focused conference that brings together executives and developers for a week of networking and discussion culminating in the DICE Awards. In her keynote address, EA Senior Vice President Laura Miele called for leaders to be removed from “lack of fundamental standards”, which appeared to be a reference to the allegations that have caused a stir. Spencer, who is faced with the task of integrating Activision Blizzard into the Xbox following the publisher’s recent acquisition, said that he still believes that gaming is a “good force in this world.” However, he also called on both “players and staff” to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all in the gaming industry.

“We fall short when we don’t provide a safe and inclusive environment for everyone working in our industry. We fall short when it comes to tolerating abuse. Spencer has continuously lobbied for more inclusiveness in gaming, making Xbox one of the industry leaders in terms of accessibility. He also recalls what he called a “painful” moment when women described their experience at Xbox, and “felt the emotion, the anger, the frustration”.
