Starting today, iPhone owners can edit and undo texts sent via iMessage.
That means you can now correct typos, accidental messages, or regrettable writing instantly.
The feature was announced by Apple back in June at the company’s WWDC event.
But the iOS 16 software update for iPhone is now freely available – starting Monday, September 12.
Check if you have the new iOS by going to Settings > General > Software update.
Editing texts after they’ve been sent is a rare feature — even Whatsapp doesn’t have it yet.
But WhatsApp has been offering non-sending — withdrawing an SMS from a recipient’s phone — for a while.
How to edit an iPhone text
Not all iMessages can be optimized or deleted: there is a time limit.
You only have 15 minutes to make changes to a text before the option expires.
Just press and hold the message to edit it.
Recipients are notified when a text has been edited.
However, it’s not possible to see exactly what changes were made – unless you’ve seen the message before and remembered what it said.
Also important is that both the sender and recipient must be on iOS 16 for the feature to work.
So even if you have iOS 16, you can’t undo or edit a text for someone who hasn’t upgraded yet.
You’ll get a warning that some people won’t see your changes in this case.
All must be running iOS 16 for the feature to work.
Unfortunately, when you use WhatsApp, there is no way to edit a text.
However, WhatsApp regularly adds new features and is already testing a similar hack.
So you might not have to wait too long to edit WhatsApp texts as well.
How to send an iPhone text
You can retract an iMessage on iOS 16 within the first 15 minutes by pressing and holding the text.
But don’t think you can do this quietly.
Just like WhatsApp, if a text has “not been sent,” a note will appear for both the sender and the recipient.
This prevents any confusion once text has disappeared.
With WhatsApp it is a very similar process.
Just press and hold the message and select “Delete for everyone”.
This option will disappear after too much time has passed, so be quick.
Can I install iOS 16?
The sad reality is that not all iPhone models can upgrade to iOS 16.
You need an iPhone 8 or later to get the new iOS 16.
That means two iPhone generations have been cut off: the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 7.
The 1st gen iPhone SE also won’t be compatible with iOS 16, but it was with iOS 15.5.
iOS 16 comes standard on all iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.
Here is the full list of iOS 16 supported devices before iPhone 14:
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13 pro
- iPhone 13 Pro max
- iphone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 pro
- iPhone 12 pro max
- iphone 11
- iPhone 11 pro
- iPhone 11 Pro max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8plus
- iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)
If you’re using an older iPhone, you simply need to upgrade to access iOS 16.
Otherwise you will miss the new features.
But what’s even more worrying is that if you’re unable to get the latest iOS, you’ll lose access to the latest security fixes.
These are critical patches that close vulnerabilities used by hackers to gain access to your systems.
So using a very old iPhone that cannot be updated could put you at risk.
If you can’t update to iOS 16, you’d better update your iPhone sooner rather than later.
