BRITS may be paid to walk or bike to work instead of driving under a new program.
Paying people to use greener means of transport would be a smarter alternative than a “blunt tool” Ultra-low-emissions zones, an expert says.
Simon Birkett, founder and director of Clean Air in London, said: The London ULEZ, Congestion Fee and Low Emissions zone is a “stub” for charging someone to walk 100 yards into an area, Simon Birkett, founder and director of Clean Air in London, said.
He revealed that he has a plan for a new smart pedestrian charging system.
It is unclear how the technology will work to pay people or how much they will be paid.
London City Hall has pledged to find an alternative to the toll system by the end of the decade but Mr Birkett said the changes could be made within three years with full public consultation.
“I want to get the mayor’s commitment to introduce a bigger, stronger, fairer, smarter plan,” he said.
“The beauty of it is that you can actually pay people to walk or cycle.”
Air pollution is a big killer in the capital. Many areas go beyond the legal limit for toxic nitrogen and particulate matter, MyLondon report.
Brixton Road in Lambeth, South London, is seven times the World Health Organization’s new maximum for several air pollution indicators.
Elliot Treharne, Head of Air Quality at the University College London Authority, said ULEZ was the “jewel in the crown” of efforts to combat air pollution, but acknowledged that much more needs to be done.
