You can now be banned from digital shopping at Amazon after a dispute with Google

AMAZON shoppers looking to purchase digital goods such as e-books can no longer purchase them on the company’s Android app.

The move comes amid a bitter dispute over Google’s 30 percent cut the tech giant gets from sales with its Android payments system.

Instead, the online retailer circumvents the problem by directing millions of people to its main website instead.

This way they can bypass Google’s payment system and keep all the money in their own pocket – but it’s a bit of a nuisance for customers.

It comes as Amazon recently announced its first quarterly loss since 2015.

Jeff Bezos’ retail giant has had a shock absorber for a few years thanks to the pandemic, but it seems consumers have returned to brick-and-mortar stores now that things have reopened.

Although customers cannot make digital purchases themselves within the Amazon app, they can still access them there after purchasing them externally.

The change follows new rules from Google that require businesses with annual sales over $1 million (£800,000) to pay a 30 per cent cut.

A company representative told The Sun that the decision was “carefully considered” in response to “Google’s new payment policies.”

“We continue to evaluate the integration of our apps and will let customers know if there is more to share,” they said.

Amazon’s app for iPhone has never allowed downloadable digital purchases.

Developers have long complained about how much the big two, Apple and Google, take from the sales generated in their apps.

Fortnite maker Epic Games was one of the biggest names to speak out against the couple.

The popular game was subsequently removed.

Epic Games has initiated legal proceedings in several countries.

So far, a US judge has ruled that Apple has not engaged in antitrust conduct.
