The word in question is: Ghoti.

How do you think it’s pronounced?

If you said something like “goaty” or “gotty,” you’re dead wrong.

You might be surprised to learn that the correct way to put it is actually… “fish”.

That’s right, “fish”.

As? Well, as the TikToker explains, it’s all about breaking the word into pieces.

The first two letters “gh” are pronounced like the “gh” in “enough”.

Then we have an “o” in the middle, which is said like the “o” in “women”.

And finally, the “ti” is pronounced “shh” as it is pronounced in “station.”

However, it should be noted that ghoti is actually not a real word at all.

It’s a well-known creative repelling designed to demonstrate some of the odd irregularities we have in the English language.

And people in the comments on TikTok are divided on that.

“Find me another word that starts with gh that sounds like it’s at the end,” said one.

“There is not any.”

“So the word GHOST was supposed to be pronounced fist?” another joked.
