Young girl (4) who died in an accident at Sligo’s caravan park was locally named Alice Dunleavy

A young girl who tragically died at a trailer park in Enniscrone, Co Sligo on Friday was dubbed Alice Kitty Dunleavy locally.

The four-year-old, who is from Ballina in Co Mayo but was visiting the trailer park during the holidays, is believed to have been hit by a vehicle in the tragic accident.

She was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where she later died.

Alice is survived by devastated parents John and Ann Marie, sisters Rose and April, and grandparents Michael and Claire Courell and Michael and Eithne Dunleavy.

The young girl is resting at McGowan’s funeral home in Ballina tonight from 7pm to 9pm.

Her funeral mass, a ‘Mass of Angels’, will be held at 1.30pm on Monday at St Muredach’s Cathedral, with a subsequent burial in Leigue Cemetery, Ballina.

A statement on RIP.ie reads: “The death of Alice Kitty Dunleavy of ‘Dunell’, Lord Edward St, Ballina, Co. Mayo has occurred. Tragically at the age of 4 after an accident.

“Alice, beloved and esteemed daughter of John & Ann Marie, esteemed sister of Rose & April, granddaughter of Michael & Claire Courell & Michael & Eithne Dunleavy.

“Sadly missed by her parents, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. gone to the angels.

“Rest at McGowan’s Funeral Home, Ballina, on Sunday evenings from 7pm to 9pm.

“The funeral will arrive for Mass of the Angels at St Muredach’s Cathedral on Monday at 1.30pm, with the funeral continuing at Leigue Cemetery in Ballina.”

Tributes to the ‘beautiful child’ have poured in online over the weekend with many families sending their condolences to the Dunleavys.

A Galway mother wrote: “Our condolences go out to all who are thinking of you all at this sad time the loss of your beautiful girl may she rest in peace.”

Another said: “Everyone’s worst nightmare. RIP little girl. Something so tragic can happen in a split second. The poor family and the driver, their life will never be the same again.”

A third added: “Such devastating news to hear tonight absolutely heartbreaking for her family may the little angel rest in peace. God be upon her family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.”

While another wrote: “Lovely Alice there are no words. I am absolutely devastated to learn of your death. You were a sunshine who always had a smile on your face. You will be greatly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing you.

“To John, Ann Marie, Rose and April, you are in my thoughts and prayers at this terrible time. i send you all my love rest in peace alice xox”

A spokesman for An Garda Siochana said: “Gardai and emergency services visited the site of an incident in Enniscrone, Co Sligo.”

The incident took place at a trailer park overlooking Killala Bay.

“A four-year-old child was injured in the incident.”

“She was taken to Sligo University Hospital where she has since passed away.

“A family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family at this time.”
