A young man is fighting for his life after being brutally assaulted in an overnight attack involving up to 10 people.

The 29-year-old victim was out with family members in Monasterevin, Co Kildare when he was seriously injured.

At this point, Gardaí believe there was an argument with a group in a building on Dublin Road, before the matter later escalated and spilled onto the street.

The emergency services were alerted to the incident around 12.30am this morning and discovered the victim was lying unresponsive on the ground with severe head injuries.

He was later taken to Tallaght Hospital where he remains seriously ill and very concerned about his health.

A man in his 50s, believed to be his father, suffered facial wounds in the incident and was taken to Portlaoise Hospital for treatment of injuries that were described as non-life threatening.

The couple are said to be originally from County Limerick and met in Monasterevin last night for a family event.

No arrests have yet been made, but investigating Gardaí are pursuing a clear line of inquiry into the matter.

A number of witnesses have already come forward to support the Garda investigation and at this time a group of up to 10 people are believed to have been involved in the fighting.

Investigators have also harvested CCTV footage from the area to help identify everyone involved.

A source told Independent.ie: “Gardaí is working well together on this investigation and is confident of identifying all those involved in order to make arrests.

“There are serious concerns about the condition of this young man and he remains critically ill in hospital.

“The two men were out with family members in Monasterevin for a few pints and whatever sparked this argument it ended in a very violent attack involving a group of people.”

Officers from Kildare Garda Station are investigating the attack and a dispatcher has been set up to oversee the investigation.

The Dublin Road scene was also preserved for forensic examination.

A Garda spokesman said they are asking any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

“The investigating Gardaí are appealing to witnesses to this incident to come forward and to those who have camera footage to make it available to them.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Kildare Garda Station on 045 527730 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111,” a spokesman said.

The early morning attacks follow a separate violent attack in Dublin city center on Friday evening.

A man in his 40s was seriously injured after the attack on Fownes Street Lower in Temple Bar around 9.50pm.

His injuries were described as non-life threatening and Gardaí believe several men were involved in the attack.

Pearse Street gardaí are asking anyone with information or footage of the incident – which is believed to have started at a fast food restaurant in Temple Bar Square – to get in touch with them.
