Young people in Dublin are designing a pop-up area to reclaim space in the city

Young people from north inner Dublin have reclaimed leisure spaces along the Royal Canal to socialize and interact with their peers.

The project has invited young people from Swan Youth Service to work with local non-profit organization A Playful City and HubSpot to reclaim space along Charleville Mall in Dublin 1.

Research by A Playful City shows that there is a “pronounced spatial disparity of play space in inner city Dublin”.

Creative director Neasa Ni Bhriain said young people are often “excluded from areas” where they are either unwanted or unsafe.

“So we engaged them in constructive, creative ways to enhance their experience in their local area,” she said.

“In fact, every child in the area has just one A3 sheet of paper of formal play space to play and socialize on.”

Colorful wooden seats, planters and an eye-catching mural were created along the stretch of canal near the Swan Youth Center where the young people meet with their peers and community activists.

Emilylee Duff, 16, who has just started her fifth year, said she got involved with the project to help the local community.

“In the beginning we all came and planned ideas and we thought we’d love an outdoor cafe for young people in the community, so we came up with the idea of doing the pop-up,” she said.

“There’s all sorts of stations like the baked goods station with tea and coffee, then there’s a hair station, there’s also clothes that people donate. Everyone’s idea was put into it.

“I loved being involved in it because instead of just sitting in my house all the time, I was at the club and I was interacting with everyone my age and I felt like my voice was being heard.”

HubSpot’s Director of Culture, Eimear Marrinan, added, “We’ve worked closely with young people to address their needs and engage them in discussions about their aspirations, entrepreneurship and skills development, and to connect them with HubSpotters around the world.”
