EVERY iPhone comes with a hidden weather map that shows exactly where it’s going to rain.
The handy trick is baked into the weather app – if you know where to look.
It’s even possible to scrub along a timeline for the day.
So you can see exactly when the rain will be heaviest in your area.
Apple’s weather app wasn’t always great: in fact, it used to be mocked a lot.
But it got a massive makeover in last year’s iOS 15 update, introducing a new design and some nifty features.
This is partly due to the fact that Apple bought the popular weather app Dark Sky and bundled some of its technology into Weather.
The latest update has made many changes to the weather, but one of the best features is the rain map.
First, make sure you have updated to the latest version of iOS.
Go to Settings > General > Software update and check if you are running iOS 15. If not, then update.
Next, launch the Weather app — it comes installed on your iPhone by default.
Then tap the map icon in the bottom left corner of the app.
Now tap on the three squares stacked on top of each other in the top right corner.
Select Precipitation and you can see a rolling forecast of rain as it moves around you.
You can zoom in and out to get a better view.
Closer to light blue means very little rain, while purple to yellow to white means heavier rainfall.
You can use the bar at the bottom of the screen to move through time.
And when that’s gone, just tap the screen to bring it back.
Use the bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll through the time of day.
This shows precipitation moving through cities, countries, and around the world.
So you can see exactly where and when the rain is coming – and when it’s at its worst.
Of course, this is all predictive so the map may not be spot on – but that’s always the case with weather.
There are some other maps that you can use in the iPhone Weather app as well.
A similar map in the same section shows temperature using a heat map.
So darker red means very hot temperatures, while blue means cold.
And there’s an air quality map too – which can be depressing if you live in a big city.
