Your iPhone has a hidden snow alarm that lets you know when it’s about to start

Millions of iPhones have a hidden setting that gives you snow alerts based on your location.

It’s really convenient and completely free to set up.

If snow, hail or rain sets in at your location, you will be alerted.

This gives you time to duck for cover, turn around on your walk, or put out the umbrella.

Or if you’re a fan of wintry conditions, you can grab gloves and head out for a snowball fight.

The feature couldn’t come at a better time as winter chills grip the northern hemisphere.

It is related to the major overhaul of the new iPhone weather app that launched with iOS 15 in September 2021.

Apple’s weather app hasn’t always been brilliant — and has been ridiculed before.

But the new version is significantly better and might keep you from getting soaked.

It only takes a few seconds to activate these alerts.

How to turn on weather alerts on your iPhone

First, make sure you’re updated to iOS 15 (or even better, iOS 16) – go to Settings > General > Software update.

Then give the weather app your location information or it won’t work.

Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Weather and select Always.

You’ll get even better notifications if you allow access to precise location.

Next, make sure the weather app can send notifications.

Navigate to Settings > Notifications > Weather > Allow Notifications, then select the type of notification you want.

Finally, you then need to turn on weather alerts.

Go into the Weather app and select the list icon at the bottom right.

At the top you will see an option called Stay Dry.

If you don’t see that, tap the three dots in the top right, then go to Notifications.

Tap Turn on notifications, then turn on the My location switch.

Then tap Done in the top right and it should work.

Now you’ll get an alert just before it starts to snow, hail, or rain in your location.
