YOUR iPhone gets a brand new lock screen today as Apple introduces a redesign to iPhones around the world.
The most notable change is one of several introduced with the release of iOS 16, the latest version of the iPhone operating system.
Apple began rolling out the free update to iPhones around the world on September 12, after announcing it in June.
You need an iPhone 8 or later to download and install it.
And fans are divided over the new look, with some praising it and others describing it as “ugly” on social media.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new lock screen.
New iPhone lock screen – what has changed?
First off, you now get access to lock screen widgets in iOS 16.
These Apple Watch-style “complications” let you quickly view information.
This includes upcoming calendar events, the weather, battery levels, alarms, time zones, your activity ring progress, and more, according to Apple.
You can also now have a “layered” background effect on the lock screen. This puts the subject of a photo ahead of time to create a cool depth effect.
And, for the first time, you can even change the look of the date and time with different style and color options.
There are preset options that you can customize, or you can create your own custom lock screen.
You can also take advantage of Live Activity, a new feature that tracks events in real time.
It can be a workout, sports scores, your cab ride, or a food delivery order—all from the lock screen.
Finally there’s a new design where notifications roll up from the bottom of the display, giving you the best possible view of the lock screen.
Fans don’t seem to be unanimous in their opinion about the redesign.
One person wrote on Twitter: “This new iPhone lock screen is ugly.”
Another described the update and the additional customization options it brings as a “game changer”.
