That’s because age-old Apple products – even those that seem outdated – have become lucrative collectibles.

For example, the first-generation iPhone is now worth up to £18,000 in packaging on eBay, according to Guardians.

The original iPod classic – launched in 2001 – is said to cost upwards of £36,000 on resale sites.

Even newer used iPod models are enjoyed by thousands of fans for their massive storage capacity, which is lower than most modern iPhones.

A study of the prices of Apple products on resale sites was published in 2016 by Terapeak, a company that tracks the valuation of collectibles.

Researchers have shown that vintage iPods in their original packaging are valued at the same price as collectibles.

They note that a fourth-generation red-black special edition released in collaboration with the band U2 sells for $90,000 (£66,000).

Since Apple discontinued the iPod classic, they said, the prices of newer models have skyrocketed.

Demand for vintage Apple products has increased in recent years, and the devices are now collected as sports memorabilia.

Speaking to the Guardian, professional eBay trader Hermie Brieto from Los Angeles thinks the company’s rich history is driving prices up.

“That’s because Apple’s been around for a while and a lot of product-savvy people like Apple,” Brieto said.

“I guess the collectability is down to Steve Jobs and the history of Apple.”

Of course, there are a few things you need to do before you sell your old phone.

Remember to factory reset your phone so all your data and personal information is wiped clean – you can do this with your Apple ID or through your device settings.

You should also make sure that you have removed any passcode locks on your phone and that it is fully charged before sending it out.
