YouTube blocks Russian state-sponsored media channels globally

YouTube immediately blocks worldwide access to channels affiliated with Russian state-sponsored media, it said on Friday, citing its policy of banning content that denies, minimizes or trivialize well-documented violent events.

The world’s most used video streaming service, owned by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) Google, says Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is now under the violent events policy and infringing material will be removed.

YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadloo said blocking Russian stores was consistent with that policy.

Previously, YouTube blocked the top Russian state-backed channels RT and Sputnik across Europe.

Russian state media have called restrictions placed on them by distributors, including app stores and other social media services, as unjustifiable censorship.

YouTube did not immediately respond to a request for comment on which channels and how many have been blocked globally or whether they will be reinstated.

According to three company employees, Google employees have urged YouTube to take additional sanctions against Russian channels, accusing them of spreading false reports about the Ukrainian leadership and civilian deaths in war. YouTube blocks Russian state-sponsored media channels globally
