BRIGHTON has been dubbed the “Los Angeles of England” by a YouTuber who lives in the city.
In a recent episode of the Trash Taste podcast, vlogger and gamer Jacksepticeye said he “fell in love” with Brighton when he visited the city to meet colleague Felix Kjellberg – known as PewDiePie.
The YouTuber, whose real name is Sean McLoughlin, moved to Brighton in 2017 from Athlone in Ireland. He has 28.6 million subscribers.
He said: “Felix lived there for a very long time and I had heard really nice things about him.
“There were a few other big YouTubers there too, but I didn’t really get it. When I went there I realized it’s like a mini LA. It has the same type of structure but smaller.
“Many years ago, I went to Felix’s for the first time over a weekend and fell in love with him straight away.”
His comments come after Brighton and Hove have partnered with California retreat Santa Monica for a cultural exchange between the two cities.
Sean had toyed with the idea of moving to Los Angeles and London but preferred Brighton’s offer.
He said: “I had already thought about moving and I figured LA was a bit too far away and you would have to get visas. I might have thought of London, but it’s just a nightmare – the traffic is terrible, there are too many people and it’s too crowded for someone who grew up in a tiny town.
“When I went to Brighton I thought ‘this is lovely’ – it’s small, the beach is there and my friends are there.
“People were just so nice and there was a really strong LGBTQ+ community there. The vegan community there is huge, so I thought, ‘This is perfect, why should I live anywhere else?’”
While he said he enjoyed living in LA for a few weeks, Sean was put off by the personality of the people who live in the city at the idea of moving there.
He said: “You hear horror stories of people moving there and then changing and becoming ‘Hollywood’ – I think it’s impossible not to do that.
“I was kind of afraid to move there if I was going to be this monster.”
Sean shared his love of Korean food on the Trash Taste podcast with hosts Connor Colquhoun, Joseph Bizinger and Garnt Maneetapho, who was born and raised in Brighton.
Sean spoke of Koji at York Place.
Sean said: “We have a good Korean restaurant in Brighton called Kogi – they do real Korean food and I’m so glad the pandemic hasn’t killed it because I was really worried.”
Garnt noted that several new restaurants from different cultures have opened up across Brighton in recent years.
He said: “I feel a lot of restaurants have popped up in Brighton now.
“I moved out just before the pandemic and I love food culture so I’ve moved back to Brighton now, there’s every kitchen under the sun now, there’s cool restaurants so I’m like f**k yes.”
Other YouTubers living in the city include Saffron Barker, Zoe Sugg, and Jack Maynard.
One of the platform’s most popular stars, PewDiePie, also lived in the city but relocated to Japan earlier this year.
