YouTuber PewDiePie is receiving backlash after fans accuse him of mocking a deaf TikToker

One of the most successful YouTubers, PewDiePie, has faced backlash after mocking a deaf woman using sign language by impersonating her with his dog.

He removed the clip from his video titled “My Dog Cringes at TikToks.”

The video, which is still available to watch, shows PewDiePie reacting to TikTok videos with his dog, which he claims are “twitching.”

The clip in question contains a popular TikToker named Scarlet_May.1 who has over 6 million followers on the platform.

The video PewDiePie was responding to is a TikTok in which Scarlet describes an encounter she had at Starbucks.

She talks about signaling her brother that the barista was too close to her, before the barista reveals she can understand sign language too.

However, it wasn’t the embarrassment Scarlet felt that PewDiePie was responding to.

Instead, he mocked Scarlet’s use of sign language throughout her video, saying that her long nails were too distracting and he couldn’t watch the video.

He also used his dog, which also has long claws, to mimic their use of sign language.

He also used a fake voice for the impression, which some believe mocked Scarlet’s unusual accent due to her deafness.

PewDiePie removed the clip from his video where he said he thought Scarlet was going to perform a TikTok dance and didn’t realize she was using sign language.

Commenting on the removal below the video, he said he had “no idea she’s deaf.”

He didn’t apologize, but ended the comment with, “Never mind, honest mistake, my mistake.”

Scarlet responded to the video saying she was disappointed at the lack of ownership for his mistake.

She begins the video by claiming, “I wasn’t surprised. I’m used to it.”

Scarlet also says she used her platform to spread acceptance of deaf people signing with long nails, and PewDiePie’s video is a “step backwards.”

She believes that the Creator would not have mocked her nails if she had not needed her hands to communicate.

The video also originally featured Scarlet in the thumbnail using her image to get views.

Making these changes to the video without an apology, Scarlet believes this is PewDiePie’s attempt to sweep his mockery “under the rug.”
