Zelensky thanks Bono and U2 for starting a campaign to bring Ukrainians home after the war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has personally thanked Bono and U2 in a video address for spearheading a campaign aimed at helping Ukrainians return home after the war.

tand Up For Ukraine will be a global social media rally to be held on April 9 to raise funds to temporarily return Ukrainian migrants “pre-war like” to their homes once safe to do so, President Zelenskyy said .

“I am grateful to U2 and Bono for this campaign initiative.

“I invite everyone; Musicians, actors, athletes, politicians, business people, everyone. Everyone who wants to join this movement and stand up for Ukraine,” President Zelenskyy said on Saturday.

This comes days after Mr Zelensky’s “well almost” comments regarding Ireland when addressing the EU, which many saw as criticism of the state’s past support for Ukraine.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that was not the case and on Friday evening Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba thanked Ireland for its efforts in supporting Ukraine.

“There is no doubt that Ireland is at the forefront within the EU and beyond in providing essential support to Ukraine in every possible way,” Mr Kuleba said on Twitter.

Bono also composed a St. Patrick’s Day poem that compared Ukraine’s president to St. Patrick, a poem which was then read by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

A summit for the Stand Up For Ukraine event has been approved by European President Ursula von der Leyen, which will mobilize funds to repair Ukrainian homes and towns following the devastation of war.

The funds will be used to “restore our homes, restore our Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

“If you have a home, you have everything. You have security, the ability to return home at any time. You know what you left your children and that they are waiting for you there.

“Millions of Ukrainians had their own homes, their own dreams.

“They had their own home until Russian missiles, bombs and shells arrived. Until the invaders came and burned and destroyed everything,” President Zelenskyy said.

To date, more than 12,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Ireland, but many of the 42 million residents have fled their homes for neighboring countries as the conflict enters its second month. Zelensky thanks Bono and U2 for starting a campaign to bring Ukrainians home after the war
